I feel strongly that it’s a duty to give back, to assist those who come after us. To share with them the skills we learned, the secrets to our success. More importantly, to share our failures. To give them an understanding of how to overcome.

 

It quickly became apparent that education is a business. Students, like consumers, were seen as revenue sources. Students, like consumers had a dollar value. They weren’t seen as the building blocks to a stronger, better institution. Things are still the same, which is why I wanted to change it.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a manual for running a business. There should be, but there isn’t. That can leave you feeling lost and frustrated. I know, I’ve been there.

 

 

 

 

 

I spent a lot of time, too much time, looking for solutions to the problems and challenges I faced. I was left with constantly throwing shit at the wall to see what would stick. That’s no way to run a business. It’s not really a way to do anything.

 

That drove me to create the resource I’d wished I’d had.

That idea played to my strengths. It tapped into decades of my experience as an educator. I strove to prepare students for whatever came at them. To get them ready with real-world practice, rather than learning everything about a piece of software. Skills that had a clear expiration date.

 

 

 

 

Owning the Design Office, allowed me to really give them up-to-date, real-world insight. I was in the trenches, just like them. I knew the challenges they’d face.  They developed a knowledge that transcended basics software skills. They could think and solve problems.

I taught real-world practice, rather than the intricacies of a piece of software.

Every business deserves to be able to put their best foot forward. However, for “reasons”, they cut corners when it comes to design and marketing. They do the best they can with what they have. It’s admirable and understandable. They shouldn’t have to struggle to succeed.

 

 

 

 

My passion is to give independent businesses exactly what they deserve. To help them be the best they can be.  There is a deep streak of self-reliance that runs through every independent owner. They do everything themselves. On one level, it’s because they have no choice, but on a deeper level; they rather enjoy it. Whether they want to admit it or not.

 

I found they just want to learn the how so the basics. To do it easier and faster; and get better results.

As independent owners we take great pride in everything we’ve built. They should. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into getting them to where they are today. That needs to be celebrated.
